How to choose artwork for your home
Choosing art for your home can feel a bit overwhelming, especially with so much out there. But really, it comes down to one thing: finding pieces that speak to you. Whether it’s a painting, a print or a sculpture, the right artwork should stop you in your tracks, even just for a moment. When you get that feeling, you’re on the right track.
If you’re not sure where to begin, don’t worry. A few simple ideas can help you make sense of it all, and maybe even enjoy the process.
Start with the mood you want in the room
First up, think about how you want the space to feel. Art sets the tone. A stormy oil painting can bring drama and depth to a hallway. Something light and abstract can lift the mood in a kitchen or living room. Soft, calming colours work wonders in bedrooms or studies. Bolder pieces are great for adding energy where you need it.
Here’s a tip: start by picking two or three colours you love. It helps to narrow your focus and makes spotting ‘the one’ a bit easier.
Explore by genre to see what you naturally like
Everyone has a type when it comes to art, even if they don’t realise it yet. Browsing by genre is a good way to figure out what you’re drawn to.
If you like a modern, urban edge, take a look at our contemporary art for sale. Mackenzie Thorpe is a great example. His work is full of colour and humour, featuring abstract depictions of children and animals that draw your attention to themes of love, loss and hope.

If you prefer something classic and calming, artists like David Farrant or Clive Madgwick are worth a look. Their work captures British landscapes and village life with warmth and detail.
For one-of-a-kind pieces, browse our original art for sale. These are completely unique. If you’re after something more affordable, check out our prints collection and drawings to buy online. Limited editions and signed works still feel special but tend to be easier on the budget.
Don’t forget sculpture
Sculpture is often overlooked, but it can totally change the feel of a space. It brings texture and shape to places that might otherwise feel a bit flat. Think sideboards, open shelves, hallways or conservatories. A well-placed sculpture becomes a real talking point.

A couple of tips if you’re thinking about adding one. First, place it where you can see it from different angles. That way, you get to enjoy the shape and detail as you move around. And second, consider the lighting. Natural light will create changing shadows throughout the day, but a small spotlight can really show off the piece in the evening.
Go with a subject that means something to you
Still stuck? Try looking at art by subject. What do you care about? What do you love?
Landscape art is a classic choice and works in almost any room. Whether it’s misty harbours or rolling hills, it brings a sense of calm and space. If you’re an animal lover, you might like David Shepherd’s big cat studies or Chloe Nugent’s colourful butterfly prints. Both are full of warmth and character.
People are naturally drawn to people too, so our figurative works are popular. Or, if you’re into classic cars, vehicle art is great for studies, home offices or garages. These pieces make brilliant gifts as well.

Link your art to your interests
One thing that really makes artwork feel right at home is when it reflects your interests. A wildlife study for the animal lover’s study. A vintage car print for the garage. A dreamy coastal scene for the guest room. When the subject matter means something to you, it adds personality. And it often makes for a thoughtful gift too. Far more personal than a generic high street print.
Choose a medium that suits the space
Medium makes a difference too. Oil paintings are rich and textured, great for anchoring a space. Watercolours feel lighter and more relaxed. Pencil and charcoal work well in more neutral, restful areas. Photography and mixed media are perfect if you want a modern look with a bit of punch.
You can always browse by medium if you’re not sure what suits your space.
Start with one piece you love
Sometimes all it takes is one piece. One that you absolutely love and can build the rest of the room around. Maybe it’s the colours, the subject or just the mood it gives you. Either way, it gives you a solid starting point for everything else - paint colour, furniture, accessories. It makes decorating feel less like guesswork.

Don’t feel you have to fill every wall at once
If you’ve just moved or redecorated, it’s tempting to want everything done straight away. But it’s okay to take your time. Live with the space for a bit. Notice where your eyes naturally go. Often, the right piece comes along when you’re not even looking for it. And when it does, you’ll know.
Get the size and placement right
One last bit of practical advice. Always check the size of the artwork against the space you have. Something large might be perfect above a fireplace, but too much for a narrow alcove. And a tiny drawing can look lost on a big wall unless it’s part of a group.
Here’s a rule of thumb. Aim for artwork that’s between half and three-quarters the width of the furniture below it. And when hanging it, centre it roughly 145cm from the floor. That’s eye level in most rooms and gives everything a nice balance.
Most of our pieces are already framed and ready to hang, which makes life easier if you’re mid-makeover.
Is it worth investing in art?
Yes, it’s worth knowing that original pieces and signed limited editions can hold their value. Sometimes even increase. If you’re thinking about collecting long-term, or simply want something with lasting quality, we can help guide you in the right direction.
