The couple behind the R John Wright Bears
If you've ever seen R John Wright bears, you'll know that they quickly capture hearts. These handmade collectable teddy bears are made of more than high-quality mohair and felt. Known for their lifelike expressions and exquisite detail, each bear is perfectly designed and produced in limited editions. We know them to be treasured by collectors for their charm, quality and nostalgic nod to classic childhood characters. But there's even more to the story with the hardworking couple who first created the bears together.

What’s the story behind the collectable bears?
In 1976, R John Wright was suddenly laid off from his job as a clerk and decided to explore a new path, dollmaking. Despite never having sewn before, he taught himself the craft and created his first doll. Weeks later, he made a pair of male dolls and sold them at a craft gallery in Brattleboro for $14 each. That same day, the dolls were resold for $28 a piece. Over the next 6 months that followed, John sold hundreds; this is where his wife, Susan Wright, began to help John.
Together, John and Susan brought their handmade creations to life, each piece lovingly designed, sculpted, and detailed with care. As the R John Wright brand grew, they began introducing a range of meticulously crafted collectable bears, which became some of their most beloved creations.
Though the brand name may highlight John, Susan’s creative contributions, sculpting, colouring, and design, were equally vital. They were a rare duo, co-founding and co-managing a collectable art brand that balanced charm with precision.
John Wright passed away on March 5, 2025, at home in Old Bennington. While his loss is deeply felt, the company continues with Susan at the helm, committed to the same artisan legacy.

Limited editions range from only 50 items to a few hundred pieces, making them rare and collectable. Each bear has its own story, like the sailor-suited Little Brown Bear, and Taffy the sweet Christmas puppy.
The R John Wright brand also creates licensed classics such as Winnie the Pooh, Paddington, and Beatrix Potter.

Why are Taffy Bear is so popular?

Taffy’s sweetness, tartan collar, bell, and charming mohair finish make it a fan favourite and a heart-stealer in every collection. This popularity is mirrored in the prices and demand for various beloved bears.

Are R John Wright bears a good investment?
Yes, absolutely. We've seen demand for these adorable bears grow steadily in recent years. And with John’s passing and no plans to sell or expand production, its scarcity is set to increase, particularly as Susan is reported as saying that production will finish when she decides to close the business.
If you're drawn to these adorable bears and heartwarming story, R. John Wright bears are a golden investment, both emotionally and financially. But with so many reproductions out there, how can you be sure you’re getting an authentic bear?
How to identify authentic RJW bears
- Look for the small brass "RJW" button sewn into the ankle or paw
- Each comes with a certificate of authenticity, edition number and label
- Fine materials like mohair or alpaca, glass eyes, leather nose, detailed stitching and realistic wear. Mass-made impostors usually skip these.

Caring tips to keep your R John Wright bear in perfect condition
- Dust regularly using a gentle brush with bristles
- No Washing, never submerge and surface clean with a damp cloth
- Avoid Sunlight as this will prevent fading
- Protect Joints by posing them carefully to preserve the internal wiring and stuffing
Comparing Steiff and R John Wright bears
When it comes to collectable teddy bears, two names often come up: Steiff and R John Wright. Both brands offer beautifully made bears with rich histories, but collectors often wonder which is the better choice.
Steiff is a heritage brand widely loved, but RJW stands out for its artistic storytelling, exclusivity, and the very personal touch of a small workshop. Both have their strengths: Steiff for legacy and availability, and RJW for limited editions and emotional depth.

Will value grow?
All signs point upward. With John’s 2025 passing and ongoing private ownership, production is unlikely to scale or continue indefinitely. Lower supply = higher value.
