Antique Buying Trends For The Future

Antique Buying Trends For The Future

Looking to buy an antique item? Not sure what’s popular right now? Trends change all the time as tastes evolve. 2020 brings with it a new era of antiques. Included in this blog are items of a ranging age, colour and value. If you want to update your home, your collection, or want to find a piece of a particular style, PM Antiques & Collectables are here to help.

What counts as an antique?

An antique is classified as “a collectable object such as a piece of furniture or work of art that has a high value because of its age and quality”. These collectables have to be over 100 years old to be considered antique. The classification of a collectable antique object is subjective however, varying from person to person. Therefore, trying to predict trends is never easy.
Look at the demise of the brown furniture market for instance. Today’s younger generation wouldn’t look twice at a piece of 18th or 19th century furniture. That being said, particular pieces such as campaign chests, leather chesterfield sofas, Globe Wernicke sectional bookcases and haberdashery cabinets have retained their appeal and are always in high-demand.

What do the experts predict?

Dr Lori expects that: “In 2020, the most popular antiques, based on my decades of appraisal and museum experience, will be Art Deco pieces, particularly furniture, fine art, china, home accessories, and jewellery”. The sales of antiques has been on the rise in the past few years, this can mainly be attributed to the general public’s awareness of global warming. The emphasis on reuse and recycle has grown exponentially. The average consumer is now comprehending that you don’t always need to buy new.
Not only can antiques provide excellent value for money, they also preserve our heritage for future generations by reducing landfill, carbon emissions and the intake of new goods from abroad. There has never been a better time to buy.
As a footnote to this, PM Antiques & Collectables are active members of Surrey Hills Enterprises, part of a growing community supporting the preservation of the Surrey Hills and surrounding area.

What do PM Antiques & Collectables believe will be antiques of the future?

“Mid-century design furniture. Not only is it currently very popular amongst interior designers but it’s a household necessity too – homes will always need furniture. Younger audiences love it and I don’t see that changing anytime soon” says Phil Mires, founder of PM Antiques & Collectables.

Antiques are growing in popularity

As trends change so regularly, it is hard to pinpoint exactly which style of items are gaining popularity. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the volume of people seeking a new look to their home has skyrocketed. With holidays cancelled for the foreseeable future, many see home and garden improvements as the next best thing and are therefore taking to the internet to find decorative and collectable items.
There’s really no way to picture how the trends will develop with the current circumstances, but one thing is for sure, antique sales are climbing by the day.
