Pieter van Abeele - A commemorative silver medal for the embarkation of King Charles II at Scheveningen, framed and glazed (double sided).
Mount reads ‘Medal of Charles II by P. van Abeele, on his embarkation at Scheveningen for England and for his restoration, 1660’. Medal is inscribed in Dutch to verso - translates to; ‘His Majesty departed from Holland by Scheveningen to his own kingdom, 2 June, 1660’. Formed in high-relief with two circular plates married with a broad rim (Medallic Illustrations I, 455, 44,). Previously pieced for suspension but has since been plugged.
Medal measures 70mm diameter and the frame 127mm x 127mm. Some wear/losses to frame.
Provenance: From the West Horsley Place estate. Formerly featured at Sotheby’s (labels present).
Literature: West Horsley Place, Surrey, Inventory, 1938, Vol. 1, p.16, in the Morning Room.
