Tim Cotterill “The Frogman” Story behind his famous sculptures
Tim Cotterill, known to many as The Frogman, has charmed collectors around the world with his distinctive bronze frog sculptures. Full of character and life, each piece reflects Cotterill’s playful imagination and technical mastery. But what is it about these frogs that continues to capture so much attention? The answer lies in his remarkable story.
The story behind “The Frogman” sculptures
Tim Cotterill was born in Leicester in 1950. From a young age, he was fascinated by the natural world, particularly the movement and character of frogs and other pond life. This early curiosity developed alongside his talents in engineering, stone masonry, and landscape design, skills that would later benefit his sculptures.
In the 1970s and 1980s, Cotterill experimented with welded steel sculptures, creating a range of animals and birds. His work quickly gained recognition, with pieces sold at prestigious venues including Sotheby’s in London. By the 1990s, a move to California allowed him to embrace the warm, vibrant environment, giving rise to the iconic bronze frogs for which he is now best known.
Each sculpture aims to capture the essence of a frog’s personality, from contemplative and serene to playful and mischievous. Using the lost-wax casting technique, every frog is carefully hand-finished to highlight detail and movement.
Cotterill’s frogs are a celebration of character, capturing moments of life that are at once amusing and elegant. Some frogs leap boldly into action, while others sit serenely, inviting reflection. His popular bronze frogs have earned him the affectionate title “The Frogman.”
