Graham Clarke’s Early Life & Education

Graham Clarke was born in 1941. His experience living through the austerity of war and post-war Britain heavily influenced his works, which can be seen responding to the comedy of everyday life through the eyes of the ‘common man’.  Having shown an early interest in drawing, Clarke attended the Beckenham School of Art where he was inspired by the works of Samuel Palmer and his ability to romantically capture the Shoreham countryside. Clarke then attending the Royal College of Art where he specialised in illustration, printmaking and calligraphy. Here he developed his individual aesthetic and style by printing traditional landscapes under the guidance of Edwards Bawden. Having graduated in 1962, Clarke benefitted from a rise in popularity of printmaking in Britain and landed commissions from the London Transport Publicity department and the Editions Alecto.

Graham Clarke’s Success & Accolades

The late 1960s and 70s saw continued success for Clarke. His creations became ever popular, gaining notability in Britain and oversees through his whimsical yet thoughtful depictions, blending humour with social and political edge made them a relatable display of true artistry. In 1973, his works ‘Dance by the Light of the Moon,’ sold out whilst exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Show. 

Having created over 400 images, Graham Clarke is now publicly recognised for his contributions to contemporary art, becoming a pioneer of his own style and imagination. Examples of his works are now held by some of the most prestigious royal and public collections including the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Tate Gallery, and further afield at the New York Public Library and the Hiroshima Peace Museum.
