How To Sell Your Antiques and Collectibles

Here at PM Antiques and Collectables, we understand that knowing where to start when selling your antiques can be difficult. As professionals, we have many years of experience identifying and reselling valuable antiques and collectibles, and we hope to make the process a little easier for you by giving you a step by step guide on how to sell your antiques.

Build Up Your Knowledge On Your Antique

It will be impossible to know the value of the item you wish to sell until you know more about it. If you have not identified what the make of the item is, this is a good place to start. Try to locate the manufacturer’s mark at the base of the antique to find the name of the maker, which can then be googled to find out more about the age, originality and value of the item.

Do Some Market Research

Now you know more about the antique you are selling, it is important to see how many others are selling this item (if any) and what price these are selling for. Identifying a price bracket for your item will help you stay unswayed by offers that are too low, although it is important to factor in the quality of the antique and how rare it is.  If your item is more common, you cannot expect to sell for a higher price than any others available, and you could expect to be offered even 50% of what you have found to be the current market value.

Decide Where You Will Sell Your Antique

Depending on the item you have, or the access you have to auctions, different methods of selling will work for different people. A popular option nowadays is selling online, due to the ease and accessibility to a wider audience of people. Sites like Ebay and Etsy can be good for selling unique pieces and you can set the price or leave it open for bids, however, the fees can quickly rack up. Even though you can choose to only pay fees if the item sells, you will still have to factor in return costs, as Ebay can force a return if they decide to heed a customer’s complaint – so stay prepared.

Another popular option is selling to a dealer or retailer. An experienced retailer will be able to offer you honest and fair prices and give good advice, without trying to steal your money. If you are unsure and want to sell to someone you can trust who won’t charge auction house fees and commission, get in touch with us at PM Antiques and we would be more than happy to help you.
