Are Border Fine Arts valuable?
Founded in 1974 in Langholm, Scotland, the Border Fine Arts brand has become renowned for realistic figurines and tableaux depicting scenes of farming, wildlife and rural living, drawing inspiration from the Scottish countryside surrounding the factory where they are made. Gaining a reputation for the intricacy and attention to detail used in the models, the company quickly became a success. They outgrew their original home in an 18th century farmhouse and subsequently moved into a factory, and in 1986 the company was presented the Scottish Business Achievement Award.
The ornaments are initially modelled in wax, which are then moulded to create replicas in resin, and these are subsequently painted and detailed, often by hand.
Are Border Fine Arts still made?
Unfortunately, after the turn of the century Border Fine Arts faced a decline in demand and sales which eventually led to the factory closing its doors in 2016. Nevertheless, Border Fine Arts still thrives on the secondary market, with many models producing high amounts and many calling for a resumption of production.
What factors affect the value of Border Fine Arts?
The ornaments come in various different types and sizes which can heavily affect their value. The models handmade in Scotland are more desirable amongst collectors than the Studio models which were mass-produced in China. In February 2024, the ‘A New Bale,’ model handmade by Ray Ayres fetched £1700 at auction, whereas, many studio models often produce values of under £50.
Furthermore, special edition pieces tend to generate higher amounts due to their limited supply. For example, only 600 models of the ‘The Threshing Mill’ were ever produced and it can now achieve over £1000. Similarly, ’20 Acres a Day,’ was limited to a number of 500 units, and as a result, an example sold for £550 in 2020.
As with other collectables on the secondary market, condition and original packaging can also heavily affect values achieved. Due to their fragile nature, models in pristine condition have been known to generate greater values amongst collectors and damage can severely negatively affect appeal. In addition, having a model with its accompanying box and certificate of authenticity can further boost its value.
Are Border Fine Arts valuable?
Yes, Border Fine Arts can be valuable, especially handmade Scottish pieces, limited editions, and models in pristine condition with original packaging. Values range widely based on rarity, and condition, with some pieces fetching thousands of pounds at auction. However, mass-produced studio models typically have lower value.
