Retro Gaming Consoles To Look Out For In 2021

Gaming consoles have changed considerably over the decades. From the beginnings of arcade games, to now having games on your phones, many parts of the gaming industry are very different. Many consoles that were once household names and favourites, have now become antiques or collectables. So if you enjoyed them in the past, why not have a look to see if they’re still available today?

How Consoles Have Evolved

Consoles themselves first started to make a big appearance in the early 1970s. Gaming consoles such as Odyssey and Spacewar were some of the first to emerge. These were very different from what we see today. These consoles came with several pre loaded games and that was it, a far cry from modern consoles. The first thing to change was being limited to only a few games, which changed in the early 1980s. The evolution of memory chips transformed the gaming industry. It allowed us to buy as many games as we wanted, and swap them out whenever we felt like it. Some of the original console favourites are those such as Donkey Kong and Pac Man. 

Handheld Consoles

These began to emerge in the early 1990s. Popular manufacturers such as Nintendo began to make an impact at this time. The 16-bit era brought some drastic changes to the gaming community including Sonic the Hedgehog and Mario. It’s hard to believe that the Xbox 360 was only released a decade later in 2005. 

Recent Highlight – Sinclair ZX Spectrum

This ZX Spectrum console was sold with a selection of games include, Geoff Capes Strongman, 007 A View to Kill, 007 The Living Daylights, 007 Licence to Kill, Out Run, Turbo Out Run, Red Heat, Road Runner and Death wish 3.
