Our Alfa Romeo Alfasuds: Take A Closer Look

When it went on sale in 1972, after first being launched the previous year at the Turin Motor Show, the Alfasud rewrote the book. Given that Alfa Romeo had no experience of small front-wheel drive cars, the sheer dynamic excellence of the flat-four powered Sud came as a shock, leaving the opposition grasping at straws in order to catch up. The Alfasud was immediately commended by the media for its styling.

In 1976, Alfa Romeo trumped the standard ‘Sud by reworking it into a gorgeous coupé and the results were predictably fantastic. Designing was handled by Giugiaro who, of course, had penned Alfa Romeo’s most praised design, the 105 Series and, who at the time was probably the best designer in the world in terms of drawing cars that were simply ‘beautiful’.

The Alfasud is considered one of Alfa Romeo’s most successful models, with over a million examples manufactured between 1972 and 1989. Despite their sophisticated engineering, Alfasuds had an ominous reputation for suffering from corrosion, predominantly due to the poor-quality steel used in their manufacture. As result, it is believed fewer than 100 registered ‘Suds are left in the UK.

1983 Alfa Romeo Alfasud Ti QV Green Cloverleaf

This Alfa Romeo Alfasud Ti Quadrifoglio Verde was first registered on 28^th January 1983 and has been under the same ownership for the past 28 years. She is presented in Rosso with stylish vinyl and cloth interior trim and boasts a raspy 1.5 boxer engine producing 105hp through a five-speed manual transmission. The Quadrifoglio Verde (Green Cloverleaf) was Alfa Romeo’s performance-topping Alfasud and, at the time of its release, was considered Italy’s rival to the Golf GTI. In addition to its uprated engine, the Alfasud QV bared several distinctive aesthetic features to signify its sporty status including 13-inch ‘Speedline’ alloy wheels, twin-headlights, spot lights, a rear spoiler and ‘Ti’ flecked seat covers in black and red. This particular example also has a fitted sunroof – a factory option at the time of production.

The car spent its first twelve years as a daily driver before retiring to life as a classic toy, with recurring periods spent in storage. Notably, the Alfasud was fully restored circa 1995 which included a bare metal respray. In 2009, with an odometer reading of 91,987, the car was put into dry storage; she was recommissioned this year with the odometer being 92,015 at the point of the MoT test.

Showing no signs of any accident damage, this Alfasud is a remarkably sound, solid example. She is sold newly serviced by classic Alfa Romeo specialist Thorobred Cars, Laleham and also benefits from recent new CV joints, cambelts and reconditioned alloy wheels. A comprehensive history folder accompanies this Italian hot-hatch with receipts and MoT test certificates dating back to the point of registration and confirming the mileage to be correct.

1983 Alfa Romeo Alfasud 1.5 Gold Cloverleaf

First registered on 27^th May 1983, this Alfa Romeo Alfasud Gold Cloverleaf has covered 112,000 miles across three long-term proprietorships. She is presented in Grigio Nisida (metallic silver) with contrasting beige velour and vinyl interior and boasts a raspy 1.5 boxer engine producing 95hp through a five-speed manual transmission. Notably, the Gold Cloverleaf was Alfa Romeo’s flagship variant of the Alfasud, baring several sophisticated features including front electric windows, 13-inch ‘Campanatura’ 32-spoke alloy wheels, woodrim steering wheel and matching gear knob and a headlight wash/wipe system. For many the Gold Cloverleaf is the best looking of all the ‘Suds.

Showing no signs of accident damage or corrosion, this Alfasud is quite simply a time-warp example. As result of meticulous maintenance, the car has had no MoT advisories recorded in the past 15 years and notably featured in the February 2000 issue of Auto Italia magazine. In 1999 the ‘Sud benefitted from an engine rebuild and has only travelled around 15,000 miles since with recurring periods spent in storage.

She is supplied with two sets of keys, original handbook, ‘Alfacover’ folder, MoT certificates and a large file of invoices detailing mileage and works completed. Newly serviced by classic Alfa Romeo specialists and MoT’d until 26th April 2022.
